Cigarette Smoking "Major" Risk Factor For NIDDM
Men who smoke 16-25 cigarettes per day, or more, have a "...3.27 times higher risk of developing non-insulin-dependent diabetes..." than men who have never smoked. The finding, described in the January 15 issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology, is from an 8-year study of more than 2,300 Japanese men.

Age at initiation of smoking also appears to be linked to risk of developing NIDDM, Dr. Norito Kawakami of Gifu, Japan, says. The lead investigator notes that "...[b]eing a past smoker at baseline [is] associated with a nonsignificant but slightly lower risk of NIDDM...[which] is consistent with a trend of decreasing NIDDM risk with years since quitting smoking."
