SSSD 1997 Göteborg

We cordially invite you to Göteborg in Sweden and to attend the 32nd Annual Meeting of the Scandinavian Society for the Study of Diabetes.

Time:
Opening of the meeting will be on Friday May 23, at 9.00 a.m. and closure on Sunday May 25 at 12.30 p.m. Registration will begin on Thursday May 22 from 8.00 a.m. at the Svenska Mässan Congress Centre. The "get-together" party on Thursday 23 starts at 7 00 pm.

Place:
Svenska Mässan Congress Centre, Mässans Gata 8, Göteborg, located in the center of Göteborg.

Registration:
The registration fee covers the scientific program, refreshments and lunches and the social program, excluding the banquet and the lunch Sunday 25. Membership of the Society enables you to get a reduction of the registration fee. Therefore we ask you to check your present status of the membership from the address label. The Society also welcomes new members with a scientific and/or clinical interest in diabetes. Payment of the membership fee (50 SEK/year) can be transferred to Swedish postal account 54 73 14-5 addressed "Scandinavian Society for the Study of Diabetes", Sweden. Money orders are accepted as well. Please note that the deadline for a reduced registration fee is April 1, 1997.

Cancellations:
In case of cancellation before April 25, 1997 a cancellation fee of SEK 500 will be deducted. After that date no refund can be forwarded. Refunds will be processed after the meeting according to applications addressed to the congress office.

Abstracts:
Abstracts from all fields of clinical and experimental diabetes are welcome. Abstracts written on the form enclosed is a prerequisite for presentation of the work. Please follow the guidelines shown on the reverse side of the abstract form. Return the abstract and 7 copies to Professor Ulf Smith, Institute of Internal Medicine, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, S-413 45 Göteborg, Sweden. Abstracts must be received by January 31, 1997. You will be notified on the decision of the scientific committee by February 28, 1997.

Invited lectures to be included in the program:

  • Global forecast on diabetes epidemiology
  • Dyslipidemia in NIDDM
  • Insulin resistance - molecular mechanisms and importance
  • Update on leptin research
  • Regulation of glucose transport
  • Intervention trials in IDDM
  • Diabetic complications
  • Novo Nordisk Lecture
  • Lundbaek Lecture
The congress language will be English except for the session for diabetes nurses, where the language will be Scandinavian. Mounting of posters will begin on Thursday afternoon, May 23.

Travelling:
The official carrier for the meeting will be SAS. Apex fares can be obtained from several Scandinavian cities; see also the travel order form. Airport transportation: A bus service operates every 20 minutes between Landvetter Airport and Göteborg Congress Centre. There is also a limousine and taxi service (ask for a fixed price, app. SEK 250).

Travel grants:
SSSD traditionally provides a number of travel grants for young investigators and participants. Prerequisite for application of a travel grant is an accepted abstract and travel expenses exceeding SEK 2 000. All members aged 35 years or less are encouraged to apply. Please send an estimation of your travel expenses and a curriculum vitae together with the abstract to Professor Ulf Smith, Institute of Internal Medicine, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, S-413 45 Göteborg, Sweden. Participants from the Baltic countries will also have an opportunity to apply for special travel grants.

Exhibition:
Trade exhibition for medical equipment and pharmaceutical products wll be held in the Congress hall, in the immediate vicinity of the meeting venue.

Accommodation:
There are several good hotels in the center of the city available for delegates. A number of student rooms have also been reserved as a cheaper alternative. Prices are shown in the accompanying registration form.
Hotel Gothia: A high standard hotel directly adjoining the Congress centre. 200 rooms reserved in the 18 floor hotel.
Hotel Opalen: A good standard hotel just 2 minutes walking distance from the congress hall. 100 rooms reserved.
Radisson SAS Park Avenue Hotel: Situated on the Kungsportsavenyn, the main street of Göteborg, 10 min walking distance from the Congress hall. An excellent hotel of highest standard, 30 rooms reserved.
SGS Student apartments/rooms: Cheaper, fully furnished rooms incl. bathroom and access to kitchen, about 800 meters from the Congress hall. 1-, 2-, or 4-bed room. Includes linen, but not breakfast.

Social activities:
Thursday 23: "Get-together" party in the Museum of Modern Art, situated at Götaplatsen, Start: 7.00 pm Kungportsavenyn. Possibility to visit the exhibition of Bruno Liljefors, one of the most famous painters of Sweden. Friday 24: Reception at the Town Hall, Börsen, at Gustaf Adolfs Torg. Saturday 25: The banquet with entertainment and dancing.
