It is amazing to see when ideas that has been known to be the truth for decades turn out to be simply dogmas and
myths. One such scenario is in the areas of calcium signalling in pancreatic beta cells. It is widely known that
calcium entering from extracellular space into the cytoplasm is the main source for calcium that increases
cytoplasmic calcium concentration in beta cells. Such views were generated from experiments done in vitro largely
under unphysiological conditions. There is now convincing evidence that this is only half the truth. Recent works
from Karolinska Institute show that calcium signalling in beta cell is amplified by calcium-induced calcium release
from intracellular stores. A small calcium entry thus acts only as a trigger calcium and gives rise to a large release.
Both ryanodine receptors and Ip3 receptors are involved in the latter process.
