Insulin Lispro Reduces Postprandial Hyper/Hypoglycemia In IDDM

Insulin lispro, a short-acting insulin analog with
rapid peak action, ...improves postprandial control, reduces hypoglycemic
episodes, and improves patient convenience, compared with regular human
insulin, in IDDM patients, the Multicenter Insulin Lispro Study Group reports in
the February issue of Diabetes.

Dr. James Anderson of Lilly Research Laboratories and colleagues compared the
efficacy of insulin lispro injected immediately before a meal with that of regular
human insulin injected 30-45 minutes prior to a meal in 1,008 IDDM patients in a
crossover trial.

Throughout the study, the postprandial rise in serum glucose was significantly
lower during insulin lispro therapy, with a 1-hour and 2-hour endpoint reduction
of 1.3 mmol/L and 2.0 mmol/L, respectively. The rate of hypoglycemia was 12%
less with insulin lispro" when compared with human insulin.

Dr. Anderson says ...the ability to inject insulin lispro immediately before the
meal decreases the inconvenience of insulin therapy and may allow more
appropriate adjustments of doses according to dietary changes. He concludes that
insulin lispro represents ...a step forward toward optimal insulin therapy.
