Lovastatin Therapy Reduces Myocardial Ischemia Within 4 to 6
Months"Cholesterol lowering with lovastatin appears to
be effective in eliminating myocardial ischemia during daily life in a significant
proportion of patients," according to new evidence reported by Boston
researchers.Harvard investigator Dr. Thomas C. Andrews and colleagues evaluated the effects
of lovastatin compared with placebo in a series of patients with coronary artery
disease, high cholesterol and myocardial ischemia as indicated by "...at least one
episode of ST-segment depression on ambulatory ECG monitoring.""The treatment group had lower mean total and LDL cholesterol levels at study end
and experienced a significant reduction in the number of episodes of ST-segment
depression compared with the placebo group..." after 4 to 6 months of treatment.
In fact, 65% of patients treated with lovastatin had complete resolution of
ST-segment depression compared with only 10% of those randomized to receive
placebo."This study has shown that the same treatment strategy (cholesterol lowering) that
is known to reduce cardiac risk in the medium term and long term can also improve
clinical signs of disease activity and increased risk (ischemia) in a much shorter
time frame," Dr. Andrews concludes.In a related editorial, Dr. Robert L. Frye of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN,
comments: "The importance of 'medical therapy' has new meaning in the
management of patients with coronary artery disease." He suggests that studies
conducted in the 1970s that compared surgical with medical management of
coronary artery disease should be revisited, in light of the advances in both drug
